My first wee road trip

...not counting the ride back from the dealership. Since getting the bike I have mostly used it to visit folks or go to and from work. Day before yesterday (Friday evening) I got on the bike and rode to Westmeath, a right on Lookout road until it's end at Powers road. Left on Powers to Grant's Settlement road. Right on Grant's until County Road 7 (to F's Falls), Follow 7 all the way to just outside Cobden, turn right on Hwy. 17 and stop at The Whitewater Brewery for a cold Farmer's Daughter on tap.

Saturday I followed the same route until just after Foresters falls on 7 - then I made a left onto Queens Line , then a right on Magnesium Road (county road 48). Then I crossed Hwy. 17 and made a left at Haley's Station keeping on County Road 61. At the end of 61 I made a right onto Highway 60 and followed that to Douglas where I thought I could get lunch and a beer at The Douglas Tavern. Sadly no food beyond potato chips is served and they don't take debit. Keeping on 60 I came to Kelly's Corners where a left would mean staying on 60 to Eganville, a right would mean County Road 8 to Cobden but I went straight ahead on Bulger Road (County Road 9) to Highway 41, a right up the steep hill and another right onto Mountain Road (County Road 13) at the top of the hill. A few klicks on 13 takes me to Stafford Third Line where I make a left, climb and descend French Settlement Hill and then make a right onto County Road 24 Whitewater Road, take that across Hwy. 17 to County Road 40 (Greenwood Road / Pembroke Street) right on that and then a left onto the Beachburg Road which brings the trip full circle. A very enjoyable run. The lighting was much better Friday as I hit the magic hour before sunset and all the farmland shimmered in the golden waning light and looked enchanted. Running the similar route in the early afternoon was pleasing but lacked some of the magic.

It should be noted that the speed mentioned in the screen cap of my route was the fastest speed recorded ( during a pass ) not the average speed.

More rain

Last Saturday I donned my newly purchased rain pants and hit the road. I went to a pub outside of Ottawa called The Cheshire Cat at the suggestion of my old friend Roy whom I haven't seen in decades. We had a great meal and a great chat, something we should repeat as I don't think I have that many decades left. As we prepared to leave... that is when the rain started. Quite a bit of it at first. Daytime or no, those back roads were no safer feeling than an overcrowded highway. Visibility was no good at all and, even though most of me was dry, I might have benefitted from zipping up my sleeves. My arms were wet to the elbows and when I got home, even the seat of my pants. I wonder if my girth stretched the seam of the rain pants a bit? The run into Orleans was trouble free. I have to thank another friend, Gabriel, for pointing out that - regardless of name changes - Sussex Drive goes all the way from downtown Ottawa into the heart of Orleans. It's a pretty drive as well. ...

First Service (1600 km) & accessories.

Thursday I dropped off my bike at Freedom Harley Davidson for it's first oil change & hopefully to get a few of my accessories installed. Saturday I dropped by to pick it up and ALL the accessories were either waiting for me or on the bike. YAY. Nothing is without trouble, the helmet I wanted was (I was told) not compatible with the bluetooth headset as one needs pockets in the ears to put the speakers... so I purchased the recommended helmet. When the headset arrived it was an earlier iteration, a simple set of headphones that DO NOT work with my helmet. A bit of a waste of cash and a sad misunderstanding. I will either buy a new headset or a new helmet - whatever is cheaper. A cleaning was part of the service, the bike looked all shiny & great when I took it over to my brother's place. Later that day on the ride home I encountered some rain. Not much but it made the bike look really dirty. Upon washing the bike I noticed this: The washer under the screw tha...

Summer begins

" Adown the golden sunset way   The evening comes in wimple gray;  By burnished shore and silver lake  Cool winds of ministration wake;  O'er occidental meadows far  There shines the light of moon and star,  And sweet, low-tinkling music rings  About the lips of haunted springs." ...from   A Summer Day -  by Lucy Maud Montgomery Summer is upon us and I am often on my bike now. I have been seeing some really cool things. I have found that the road to Calabogie is filled with Harleys on any given weekend. The road that runs from Calabogie to Lanark is even more fun to drive. I have spent far too much time on the backroads around here but I keep seeing different things.  A few weeks past I was on a tear down Zion Line when some Mennonite looking service was just getting out at a very low key nondescript building. I can't tell you how cool that sea of clean old timey black clothing looks through polarized sunglasses. Some...
